Assisting the Needs for the Handicapped, Inc. or AND assists in providing persons with physical disabilities with ramps and other accessibility modifications. We accomplish this by advocating for and helping to obtain the planning, materials, labor, and unmet funding necessary for appropriate construction. Our goal is to enable these individuals and their families to have more freedom and independent living.
Over 7 million U.S. family households (1 out of 10) has a family member with severe mobility impairments requiring use of ambulatory aids such as canes, crutches, walkers, scooters, and/or wheelchairs, according to the U.S. Family Household and Disability Census data.
Assisting the Needs for the Diabled was established in October 2000 for the purpose of working for the disabled in low and moderate-income families. Our objective is to help them meet their needs for ramps and home modifications -- to provide them with wheelchair accessiblity. Our mission includes advocating for the disabled population as well as providing the labor and funding for the required constrction work. With the support of our donors, our efforts significantly improve the living conditions of diabled persons by providing them and their families more freedom and independent living.
Since inception our volunteer organization has completed 106 ramps, four major room additions and sixteen wheelchair accessible bathroom and show projects. For ramps and other carpentry work we use volunteer labor from various civic, church and other organizations and social groups. Our funding comes from individuals; grants from corporations, foundations, and other nonprofit organizations; and donations of building materials from suppliers. When the work requires licensed plumbers and electricians we hire professional contract labor.
