SCOPE OF WORK
AND projects typically involve building ramps, widening doors, and installing grab bars. Using volunteer labor, volunteer crew leaders, and donated materials, most projects are completed in one or two days – usually over a weekend.
Project planning, construction design, management, and coordination with the recipient, the family members, and community support groups also are performed by volunteers – usually by AND Corporate Officers and members of the Board of Directors.
In response to the need, AND has been pioneering ways to support larger projects – such as bathroom modifications and room additions – that require more funding and contracting portions of the work to electrical and plumbing and professionals.
UNIQUE QUALIFICATIONS
Although most building contractors can build a ramp, few are familiar with proper access design and few are set up to efficiently respond in a cost-effective manner. The ADA regulations are often confusing and information sources for how to build safe ramps are scarce and usually incomplete. In practice each ramp project must be custom designed and additional home modifications, such as widening of doors, are often needed to provide full access. Also, local building codes for ramps and other related accessibility needs are either non-existent or inadequate.
We have found that most low-to-moderate income families cannot afford normal contractor cost levels. The medical costs associated with the disability have drained their funds, and they are in debt. Because of our volunteer workers and volunteer executives our costs are much lower, and we also work hard to get funding for those that have the need but not the money.
In addition to our superior designs we also use the best materials, and our assembly specifications and methods are also superior.
